Now the Story

The story starts out with a very rich and wealthy family that lived in an upscale neighborhood next to the countryside.  One day the father took his young son on a trip out into the country to visit a farm. He took him there to show him how the poor people lived. The two of them spent several days on the farm with a low-income family. At least that was their perspective about the family.

After several days on the farm, they returned home. One day while back at home, the father asked his son, “So what did you think of our trip? Did you see how the poor people lived? What did you learn?”

The son responded, “It was great Dad. Yes, I did. I saw that we have a cat and a dog, but the people on the farm had many cats and dogs. I saw that we have a swimming pool in our garden and a trampoline and lovely deck for parties, but they have fields that seem to have no end and a creek that flows into a lake. We have electric lights in our back garden, and our patio extends around the side of the house and to our neighbor’s wall, but they have all the stars in the night sky, and they have the whole horizon.”

“We have a large home on a small plot of land, they have the farmhouse, and many outbuildings and rolling fields that go beyond our sight. We have a housemaid and a nanny to help us, but they all help each other. We buy our food from the local food stores; they grow their food on the farm.”

The father was quiet. Then his son said, “Dad, thank you for showing me how poor we are!”

Isn’t perspective grand?

The Moral of the Story

Now is the time to have an honest and sincere look at your own life and your own business if you have one. Are you so busy trying to get to the next goal, or to the next level in your business that you haven’t realized how fortunate you are? Or stopped to be grateful for what you have already?

Measure your life not by what you haven’t got or what you haven’t achieved, but instead by what you have. I can’t remember who wrote this and it’s probably not accurately quoted: “Pity he who owns the world, but sacrificed his soul.”

Keep hold of your first intentions and stay true to it. It may be tempting to start expanding into other fads and areas that are currently the trend. But if it’s not something you intended to do or something that can fit into your passion. Don’t do it. I’m not saying to stick to the idea of starting an online business only, but I recommend it. All I am saying is to be true to your first idea, and the success you desire will follow.

In your plans, map out where you want to get to and how you are going to get there not in work but life. Your business should first and foremost support those goals. Not the other way around.

Can you really make money doing multi-level marketing?  Chances are you will not. Multi-level marketing is a marketing strategy used by many companies to sell their products and services on the Internet.  Affiliate earn commission from what they sell and also from other distributors that they refer to the company. Commissions are paid upwards first then down to other members. Compensation plans can vary from company to company. Companies create their own compensation plan.

In theory, these compensation plans sound great. All you have to do is recruit a few distributors, whom each recruit a few other distributors, whom each recruit a few distributors, and soon you are earning money on tens or even hundreds of distributors.

Times have changed though, and there are no longer many opportunities available for the little guy in the multi-level marketing arena.

Studies by independent consumer watchdog agencies have demonstrated that between 990 and 999 of every 1,000 participants in Multi-level marketing companies lose money, as reported in the book, “Amway Forever: The Amazing Story of a Global Business Phenomenon.”

However, according to reports from the Federal Trade Commission website, it is not that bad – only 99.25% of Multi-level Marketing participants make little to no profit, with the most significant proportion of participants operating at a net loss. Which begs the question: How are these companies able to stay in business?

Two things: First, they sell their distributors the story that they can make it to the top and lead the luxurious life. To ‘prove’ this, they showcase the tiny number of distributors at the top of the pyramid who are making money.

They also downplay the expenses and time involved to make any real money, as well as the fact that new distributors are likely to alienate friends with their newfound zeal for the company’s line of products and opportunity.

Second, they churn and burn distributors at a crazy rate. Once a distributor has purchased the required “starter pack” and “training” and “extras,” and also put in many hours trying to ‘make this thing work,’ they give up.

Can’t really blame them.

Which begs the question: Who is making money in Multi-level marketing?

Three groups of people: Those who start the MLM companies, their friends who are the very first ones to join and thus be at the top of the pyramid, and a third group…

…the shovel sellers.

Being an MLM coach can be quite lucrative.

You can work with anyone in any company and help them to build their business, for a fee.

You can create and sell courses on how to recruit and motivate a downline.

Moreover, you can sell books, audio sets and so forth on having the ‘right motivation’ and tactics to succeed in a big way.

Products like these are gobbled up by aspiring Multi-level marketing distributors, and sometimes even purchased in bulk by companies for training their downlines.

If you are thinking of joining a multi-level marketing company, you should consider again. You should only participate in this business model by just selling the tools that help new distributors to be successful in their opportunities.
